The University of Birjand, the largest and the oldest university in South Khorasan Province was founded in 1975 by offering BSc degrees in Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics. The first president of the university was Professor Mohammad Hasan Ganji, who is credited as being the Father of Modern Geography in Iran. The university has 14 faculties and colleges and more than 550 full-time and part-time faculty members and instructors. It offers more than 340 undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs and has currently more than 13000 students, out of whom one-third are taking postgraduate degree programs. The university has 9 research centers and publishes 12 academic journals. The Central Library of the university is a well-stocked one where more than 111000 book volumes, 9600 theses and dissertations, 680 academic journals, and 450 research project reports are available. In line with promoting international cooperation, the university has admitted international students and embarked on international cooperation with more than 30 universities all over the world. The university is recognized as a comprehensive public university by the Iran Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology. Based on Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2021, the university ranked 450-401 among the Asian universities.
