Department of Mining Engineering

The Department of Mining Engineering at University of Birjand was established in 1993 and remained the university’s only engineering discipline until 1999. The department began its academic activities in 1994 by admitting 25 undergraduate students in Mining Exploration Engineering. Since its establishment, the undergraduate curriculum has been revised several times by the Council for the Expansion and Planning of Higher Education, in close cooperation with leading mining engineering universities across the country. The most recent curriculum revision was completed in 2019, and the updated program has been implemented since October 2019 under the integrated Mining Engineering framework.

Graduate education in mining engineering commenced in 2008. The department currently offers master’s programs in the following specializations:

  • Mining Engineering – Mineral Exploration
  • Mining Engineering – Mining Extraction
  • Mining Engineering – Mineral Processing
  • Mining Engineering – Mining Environment

At present, nearly 200 undergraduate students and more than 110 graduate students are enrolled in the department. Graduates of the Department of Mining Engineering have consistently achieved outstanding results, including numerous single-digit rankings in the national master’s entrance examinations. With more than 27 years of educational and research experience, the department has trained hundreds of highly skilled and competent mining engineers who have played an essential role in the country’s industrial and economic development.

To date, over 600 undergraduate and more than 200 graduate students across various specializations have graduated from the department. The expertise of the faculty members, combined with the department’s facilities and academic potential, has established the Department of Mining Engineering as a key contributor to both the academic and industrial sectors, particularly in South Khorasan Province. Faculty members have continuously played a significant role in the planning and implementation of mining projects throughout the region.
