Department of Archaeology

The Department of Archaeology at University of Birjand, established in 2002 with 35 associate-degree students at the Akbarieh World Garden, is the oldest and most reputable archaeology program in eastern Iran. Over two decades, it has trained many undergraduate and graduate students in prehistoric, historic, and Islamic archaeology. With five PhD faculty members, it plays an important role in the study of Iran’s history and culture, especially in the east, and many of its graduates continue their studies at top Iranian universities.

The department has extensive educational and research facilities, including audiovisual classrooms, a pottery bank, design workshop, chemistry labs, access to major archaeological sites, academic trips, regular conferences, experienced faculty, and close cooperation with the provincial heritage organization. The program offers strong career prospects in research, education, cultural heritage organizations, and tourism, such as tour guiding, eco-lodges, and designing national and international tourism programs.
