Department of Handicrafts
Handicrafts reflect the culture and civilization of every nation, holding an important place in art, technology, economy, and society. Iranian handicrafts, rooted in millennia-old civilization and enriched by Islamic knowledge and wisdom, have long been admired worldwide. South Khorasan is one of the historic centers contributing valuable traditions to Iran’s handicrafts. The undergraduate Handicrafts program at Faculty of Arts was established in 2007 and now attracts many passionate students.
Over four years, students first study foundational subjects such as art history, Islamic art and civilization, and visual arts, alongside courses on traditional arts, design of objects in Islamic civilization, traditional design, and geometric patterns—laying the theoretical and practical groundwork of Iranian handicrafts. Later, students gain hands-on experience in specialized workshops covering pottery and tiles, traditional dyeing, miniature painting and illumination, textiles and weaving, woodcraft, and metal engraving. Complementary courses provide essential skills such as basic photography, restoration and preservation of artworks, manuscript history, and research in handicrafts. In their final semester, students complete a capstone project, creatively producing a handicraft piece—traditional or modern—drawing on their knowledge, research, and artistic talent.
