Department of Islamic Art
The need to establish a charter of Islamic art in universities to counter imported art is crucial. In today’s globalized world, cultural homogenization has overshadowed national and civilizational identities, turning local art into a field dominated by foreign, especially Western forms. Preserving authentic artistic traditions requires programs that reflect a nation’s cultural foundations, which is possible only when a civilization can express its ideas through art. The Islamic Art program, with its deep roots and cultural authenticity, offers a comprehensive system for students and cultural transmitters.
Unlike other fields such as handicrafts, it closely integrates theory and practice, shaping students’ skills, perspectives, and understanding of Iranian-Islamic art principles. While Islamic art is taught in leading universities worldwide, its presence in Iran’s academic system remains limited. At University of Birjand, the Islamic Art program offers a specialization in miniature painting, with courses including Islamic art aesthetics, Iranian Islamic arts, calligraphy, research, and workshops in illumination, floral-and-bird motifs, and miniature painting over eight semesters.
