The Department of Persian Language and Literature
The Department of Persian Language and Literature at University of Birjand is the first academic department of the Faculty of Literature and Humanities. It admitted undergraduate students for the first time in 1992. In 2002, the master’s program in Persian Language and Literature was established at the faculty, and to date more than 100 students have successfully earned a master’s degree. Following the department’s continued success and the efforts of its administrators, a specialized PhD program in Persian Language and Literature was launched in 2011. In addition, in line with the growing specialization of literary studies, a master’s program in Comparative Literature (Persian–Arabic concentration) was established in 2010, from which two cohorts have graduated so far. Another major development was the establishment of a master’s program in Arabic Language and Literature in 2012. The Department of Persian Language and Literature is one of the oldest academic departments at the university and has earned numerous scholarly distinctions over the years. At present, by admitting students at the undergraduate and master’s levels in Persian Language and Literature, Comparative Literature, and Narrative Literature; offering PhD programs in Persian Language and Literature and Lyric Literature; and providing all general Persian language courses across the university, the department is considered one of the most active academic departments at the University of Birjand.
