Department of Electrical Engineering – Power Specialization

The Department of Electrical Power Engineering began its academic activities in 1989 with the admission of students in the Associate Degree program in Electrical Power Engineering. In 2000, the department started admitting students to the Bachelor’s (Discontinuous) program in Power Engineering, and from October 2005, it also began admitting students to the Bachelor’s (Continuous) program. Continuing its upward growth, the department has admitted Master’s students since 2006 and PhD students since 2011.

Currently, benefiting from a strong academic staff, the Power Engineering Department is active not only at the undergraduate level but also at the MSc and PhD levels, offering education, supervision, and research in the specializations of Power Systems, Electrical Machines, and Power Electronics, and carrying out both research and industrial projects.

Among the key facilities and capabilities of the Power Engineering Department of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering are the Power Systems Simulation Laboratory, a Hybrid Wind–Solar Power Plant, the Permanent Secretariat of the Iranian Conference on Renewable Energy and Distributed Generation, and the publication of the research journal Iranian Journal of Power Engineering.

Research areas of the Department are:

  • Electrical Machines (design, construction, modeling, and optimization of electrical machines and drives)
  • Power System Studies (restructuring and electricity markets, optimization, FACTS devices, reliability, power system operation, power quality, and reactive power control)
  • Power Electronics (design and development of power electronic converters and switching power supplies)
  • Electromagnetic Transients in Power Systems (lightning, switching phenomena, etc.)
  • Electrical Energy Distribution Systems
  • Power System Protection and Dynamics
  • Microgrids and Smart Grids
  • Energy (energy management and renewable energy sources)
  • Insulation and High-Voltage Engineering
